Oil and gas · Imaging analysis

What does the rig look like today, compared with the model?

Data
A large archive of oil rig photographs that had never been analysed, plus the digital models of the structure.
Built
A comparison of the actual condition in the images against the digital models, flagging ongoing change such as rust and unexpected issues such as missing extinguishers.
Result
Missing features in the real environment mapped, and misplaced items highlighted.
Two spherical panoramas of the same oil rig compartment taken at different dates, showing rust and flaking paint spreading across the walls

The question

The operator held a large set of rig images that nobody had used beyond the inspection they were taken for. The question was whether that archive could say anything about how the structure was changing between visits.

What we did

We analysed the images against the digital models of the rig, so each change could be located on the structure rather than described in a report. The analysis picked up the expected wear, such as rust, and also issues nobody had been looking for, such as extinguishers missing from their positions.

What it changed

The results made a case for keeping an as-built model up to date, so safety and operational changes can be tracked against it over time.
